Got questions? We have answers.
What's the difference between carbon fiber & kevlar paddles?
The main difference between RCF or Kevlar paddles is the material that is used.
As the name suggests, RCF paddles have a carbon fiber surface and this is the most common type of pickleball paddles. RCF are a great all-round paddle meant for most types of pickleball players.
On the other hand, Kevlar paddles are a new technology and the strike-face is made up of layers of Kevlar. These types of paddles are also generally more expensive. Kevlar paddles are best suited for seasoned players who know what they want from their equipment.
Do I need a professional pickleball paddle?
Every player has different requirements from their pickleball game.
If you're just a beginner playing for fun, you might not need an advanced paddle. Something cheap and basic can get the job done.
Having said that, even beginners would greatly benefit from buying a pro paddle since you get to learn paddle control right from the start - especially if you plan on playing regularly.
For players who are more serious about their game and want to maximize their chances of winning on the court, it's highly recommended to go with a professional pickleball paddle to give you that much needed edge.
Pro paddles are built for competitive play and come packed with tech to deliver power and spin to your shots - two of the most essential elements to win more points.
What are the different types of pro pickleball paddles?
Pro pickleball paddles can vary greatly based on materials & manufacturing processes used.
Cold Press Paddles: Cold press paddles are made by layering materials (like carbon fiber or fiberglass) together with glue and resin to bond them together. The key advantage of cold press technology is that it allows for more control over how the materials are layered and distributed, which can lead to a paddle that offers excellent control and a consistent playing surface.
Thermoformed Paddles: Thermoformed paddles are created by applying heat to the paddle materials and then molded under pressure to form the shape and structure of the paddle. Thermoforming is usually a more expensive process compared to cold press and these paddles are known for their robustness and ability to withstand significant wear and tear. They typically offer a more powerful playing experience with its ability to generate powerful shots.
Kevlar Paddles: Kevlar paddles are the top choice for pickleball players looking for unmatched durability and performance. Kevlar offers exceptional strength and resistance to wear and tear, while also being very lightweight. Kevlar paddles have a remarkable ability in absorbing and dispersing the impact of the ball, leading to reduced vibration and greater comfort during play. This translates to a mix of power, control & accuracy.
14mm vs. 16mm - which size should I choose?
The thickness of a paddle depends on which playstyle you prefer and whether you're a control or power player.
14mm paddle (An All-Rounder): This paddle is good for players who are versatile in their playstyle. It's a good paddle for people who like to switch between aggressive shots and precise dinks. A 14mm paddle is light enough to remain nimble on the court. It also has enough power for when you need it.
16mm paddle (Power Player's Choice): The thicker 16mm is great for players who lean heavily towards power. The added thickness adds weight and density, making it potent to hit shots with less effort. This paddle also has better vibration dampening, but can struggle with control especially if you're not skilled enough to handle the swing weight. The 16mm paddle is the most preferred paddle for a large majority of advanced players.
